I'm often asked why I don't consider going back into employment specifically in these potential dark times for consultants and interim managers. The answer is simple I have a passion for change management and I believe in my own ability and that of my colleagues within PMCDE Limited that we can make a difference to the industry sector that we love, which is mainly Housing related. That's not to say that we don't underestimate the works of those who have chosen a different route as many of those who I look up to the most are making their own mark in employment such as David Mclean of Notting Hill Housing Trust, Julian Paine of Testway Housing and Henrietta Brown within Essex County Councils Social Care.
We are in the first flush of a new government; two parties who have been in opposition for 13 years and longer and have had plenty of time to think about how they would do things differently if they were able to control the levers of power.
Now that moment has arrived and the leaders are enthusiastic to turn their ideas into action. As a former local authority director I know that this is an interesting time as the bright eyed and bushy tailed newly elected councillors want their manifesto proposals speedily implemented. They then come into contact with the local authority machinery and it begins to become apparent that they may not be able to achieve all of their aspirations and certainly not straight away.
Pay freezes, debates about public and private sector benefits, demands for streamlining of services, and government experts reporting on new models of efficiencies all are common factors of debate at present.
So an interesting slant from us is why is it that some public sector authorities miss out on the talent pool at senior level. The public sector is often criticised at times unjustly for poor management of services but its rigid approach at times to recruitment has to bear the brunt. Talent has a cost and an exceptional candidate will know their value and will expect to negotiate terms and conditions. With talent any business can prosper but if you compromise purely because a HR policy tells you to, no negotiations are allowed and this must be done this way principle, then except what you get and look from afar at the other organisation that is prospering due to your missed opportunity.
